Child sexual abuse is a heartbreaking tragedy that affects countless children across the world. It is an egregious offense, one which leaves victims with physical, emotional and psychological wounds that can last a lifetime. Unfortunately, all too often child sexual abuse goes unreported or undetected. It can be difficult to recognize signs of abuse in a child, as they may not have the language to express what has happened to them or feel ashamed in talking about it.
The perpetrators of this heinous act are typically someone the victim knows and trusts; their own family member, teacher, neighbour or friend. This makes it even harder for victims to come forward and report their abuser. No matter who perpetuates this violence against children, it must never be tolerated and those responsible must be held accountable for their heinous actions.
It is essential that those working with children are aware of the signs of abuse so that they can take swift action if necessary. Children should also be taught about body safety from an early age so they understand how to protect themselves and speak up if something happens to them. Our society must do everything within our power to ensure that no child will ever suffer through such terrible experiences again.
